About

Africa Bio Ventures’ mission is to catalyze Africa’s biotechnology ecosystem by investing in high-impact life science innovations, building local research and manufacturing capacity, and translating science into scalable solutions that improve health, agriculture, and environmental sustainability across the continent. It does this by mobilizing patient capital and strategic expertise to grow Africa-led biotechnology companies, strengthen scientific talent pipelines and deliver measurable social and financial returns for Africa and its global partners.

The Africa Bio Ventures (ABV) is a collaborative platform dedicated to advancing biotechnology innovation, research, and entrepreneurship in Ghana and across Africa. ABV connects scientists, industry leaders, investors, and policy-makers from Africa and the global biotech ecosystem to foster partnerships, share knowledge, and catalyze solutions for health, agriculture, and environmental challenges. Through networking events, training programs, and collaborative projects, ABV empowers African bioscientists and innovators to shape the continent’s bioeconomy and strengthen its role in the global life sciences sector.

Our mission is to build and strengthen biotechnology capacity throughout the continent by fostering partnerships with biotech hubs, philanthropists, investors and biotechnology firms. Through these collaborations, the Network supports professional exchange programs, offers consulting services, and provides Contract Research Organization (CRO) solutions.

Why Now?
Africa’s biotechnology sector is on the rise. But sustainable growth depends on global partnerships, resource mobilization, and platforms that unite diverse voices. ABI is designed to fill this gap, catalyzing ideas and accelerating innovation that will impact the continent and beyond.

Mission:
To build Africa’s biotechnology future by empowering local scientists, entrepreneurs, and institutions to develop homegrown innovations in health, agriculture, and the environment.

Why Invest:
Africa is on the cusp of a biotechnology revolution. With its vast biodiversity, growing talent pool, and expanding research capacity, the continent is uniquely positioned for sustainable innovation. ABV offers investors an early opportunity to shape and benefit from this transformation.

Key Pillars of Impact:

  • Healthcare Innovation: Strengthening Africa’s health systems by supporting the development of local therapeutics, vaccines, and preventive care technologies that address diseases disproportionately affecting African populations.
  • Agrotech & Food Security: Advancing agricultural biotechnology to increase crop yields, enhance soil health, and reduce post-harvest losses through precision farming, biofertilizers, and genetic improvement of crops and livestock.
  • Diagnostics: Developing affordable, rapid diagnostic tools for infectious and chronic diseases empowering health workers with real-time data for disease surveillance and community-level health management.
  • MedTech & Medical Devices: Supporting the design and local manufacturing of medical instruments, biosensors, and imaging tools tailored to African health challenges and infrastructure realities.
  • Digital Health: Integrating mobile health platforms, telemedicine, and data analytics to improve healthcare access, strengthen patient monitoring, and bridge urban–rural healthcare divides.
  • Clinical Trials & Regulatory Innovation: Building Africa’s capacity for ethical, high-standard clinical trials ensuring that African populations are represented in global research and that innovations are tested and approved locally.
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Data Science: Harnessing AI for predictive diagnostics, precision agriculture, and bioinformatics using African data to train global models that reflect the continent’s genetic and environmental diversity.
  • Climate Tech & Sustainability: Developing bio-based solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change including carbon capture through biotechnology, drought-tolerant crops, and circular bioeconomy innovations.
  • Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: Supporting the growth of Africa’s pharma industry through partnerships, technology transfer, and the development of local capacity for drug formulation, production, and quality control.
  • Supply Chain & Bio-Infrastructure: Building resilient supply chains for scientific equipment, reagents, and medical logistics ensuring sustainable access to research and healthcare resources across the continent.

Transforming Health and Agriculture:
By promoting affordable diagnostics, vaccine development, and bio-based agricultural solutions, ABV aims to reduce Africa’s dependence on imported technologies and strengthen its health sovereignty. In agriculture, AI-assisted farming, gene editing, and biofertilizers developed through ABV networks will drive climate-smart productivity and rural development.

Building the Bioeconomy:
Africa’s bioeconomy is projected to exceed $100 billion by 2030, yet less than 2% of global biotech investment currently reaches the continent. ABI bridges this gap by connecting African research institutions with investors, accelerators, and corporate partners creating a Pan-African biotechnology ecosystem that powers job creation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive growth.

Pan-African Collaboration and Global Partnership:
ABV unites universities, startups, governments, and global institutions to foster knowledge sharing and co-creation across borders. Regional hubs in Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa will serve as anchors for innovation, ensuring that every investment translates into tangible local and continental impact.

Socioeconomic Transformation:
Each ABV-supported hub is designed to catalyze surrounding communities creating high-value employment, inspiring STEM education, and improving health outcomes. The long-term vision is an Africa where biotechnology drives industrialization, food security, and global competitiveness, positioning the continent as a vital partner in the 21st-century bioeconomy.
